What Is Physiotherapy?

Paediatric Physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy dedicated to the assessment and treatment of movement, posture, and motor development in infants, children, and adolescents. Our physiotherapists are trained to work with children experiencing a wide range of conditions that affect their ability to move, balance, and participate fully in physical activities.

Through targeted exercise programmes, movement therapy, manual techniques, and functional activities, our therapists help children build strength, improve coordination, achieve developmental milestones, and experience the joy of movement β€” from taking their first steps to running confidently in the playground.

🌟 Why Early Intervention Matters: The earlier a movement difficulty is identified and treated, the greater the child's potential for recovery and skill development. Early physiotherapy can prevent secondary complications and help children participate more fully in life.

Physiotherapy Conditions We Treat

Gross Motor Delays

Children significantly behind in milestones like rolling, sitting, crawling, standing, or walking benefit greatly from early, targeted physiotherapy.

Cerebral Palsy

Specialised physiotherapy to improve movement patterns, reduce muscle tightness, build strength, and maximise functional mobility.

Hypotonia (Low Muscle Tone)

Targeted strengthening and postural programmes for children who appear "floppy" or tire easily with physical activity due to low muscle tone.

Developmental Coordination Disorder

Helping children who are clumsy, have poor balance, or struggle with sports improve their coordination and physical confidence.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

Guided recovery programmes for children following orthopaedic surgery, helping them regain movement, strength, and function safely.

Neurological Conditions

Physiotherapy for children with spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, acquired brain injuries, or other neurological conditions affecting movement.

The Therapy Process

1

Free Consultation

We discuss your child's movement history, current abilities, and your concerns in a warm, welcoming initial meeting.

2

Physical Assessment

A detailed assessment of muscle strength, tone, balance, coordination, range of motion, and functional movement patterns.

3

Goal Setting & Planning

Clear, functional goals are set collaboratively β€” things that will make a real difference to your child's daily participation and independence.

4

Individualised Therapy

Active, play-based sessions using exercises, movement activities, and specialised equipment targeting your child's specific physical goals.

5

Home Exercise Programme

A tailored home exercise programme so your child continues to build strength, flexibility, and coordination between therapy sessions.

Physiotherapy primarily focuses on gross motor skills β€” whole-body movement, strength, balance, coordination, and mobility. Occupational Therapy focuses more on fine motor skills, sensory processing, and the skills needed for daily activities like writing, self-care, and school tasks.
Sessions are designed to be active, engaging, and fun. Your physiotherapist will use specific exercises, movement activities, equipment like balance boards and therapy balls, and play-based tasks β€” for younger children especially, sessions often look more like play than treatment.
We conduct regular reassessments against your child's goals and share detailed progress updates with parents. We use standardised measures, clinical observation, and parent-reported outcomes to track progress comprehensively.
Duration varies widely. Some children with specific, focused goals may achieve them in 3–4 months. Children with complex neurological conditions may benefit from longer-term, ongoing physiotherapy. We provide a realistic timeline and review it regularly.
